A number of folks have asked me how to find sample ballots, information on which judges to retain (or not) and commentary on the Constitutional Amendment issues that will appear on the Missouri ballot for the 2010 General Election, November 2, 2010. Here is some information that might prove useful.

I joined members of the “Veterans for Vicky” coalition this afternoon as they traveled to The American Legion, Roscoe Enloe Post #5, located on Tanner Bridge Road in Jefferson City.

The purpose of their trip?

Congressman Ike Skelton, Democrat incumbent for Missouri’s 4^th Congressional District, was scheduled to attend a veteran’s meet and greet at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon at that location. Being veterans, they wished to respectfully deliver a petition to him in person.

Their petition?

“Veterans for Vicky” are disappointed and frustrated with Ike Skelton’s campaign ads that proclaim Vicky Hartzler, Republican candidate for Missouri’s 4^th Congressional District, is not supportive of veterans and veterans’ issues.   

Earlier today at her own veteran’s meet and greet, Vicky Hartzler emphasized her support for veterans and explained that while she did vote against a veterans’ bill when she served in the Missouri House, she did not vote against veterans. She explained that the bill siphoned money away from veterans’ housing, cemeteries and other benefits to our men and women in uniform. For these reasons, she voted against the bill. At that time, veterans in her district encouraged her to vote against the bill.

“Veterans for Vicky” supports her in that decision.

“Veterans for Vicky” has collected signatures from veterans in the Fourth District to demand Ike Skelton stop running his misleading ads. The petition to Congressman Ike Skelton reads:

“We the undersigned respectfully request that you cease the broadcast of your television commercials for your campaign for U.S. Congress, specifically the commercials which misrepresent and distort the legislative voting record of Vicky Hartzler.  Hartzler’s campaign has refuted your claims and documented that every accusation your commercials make against her is unfounded and a distortion of the facts.  Honor and Truth are two of the virtues that we hold close as Veterans of the Armed Services.  We ask you to do the honorable thing by removing your less than truthful advertising concerning Vicky Hartzler’s record.”

It is this petition, signed by 90 veterans, that Les Kampen, a member of the “Veterans for Vicky” coalition brought to The American Legion and hand-delivered to Congressman Ike Skelton this afternoon. To see the delivery, watch the video clip that accompanies this story.

Kampen shared with me a “letter to the editor” that he hand-delivered to Bob Watson, reporter for the Jefferson City News-Tribune, at the event. The full text of the letter appears below:

Letter to the Editor

One thing missing from our 4th District Congressional Representative’s TV commercials, is a promise to represent us and do what is right for our district.  His vote on the stimulus bill, on the “cap and trade” energy tax, on the bailout of large corporations did not help us.  His statement, “did not vote for the health care bill,” is very disingenuous because he was one of forty co-sponsors.  He apparently did everything he could to ensure the bill passed, short of having to vote for it. 

Kudos to our Congressman for listing on his commercials the Senate bills and House resolution numbers so we could read the bills to see if he was correct in his assessment of his opponent’s voting record.  After several days of reading and searching out the truth, I determined the Congressman should be ashamed of himself.  In every case he chose to have his commercials fall under “false and misleading” instead of “truth in advertising.” Anything to win should be reserved for war, not politics. 

In September our Representative voted to not collect back federal taxes from ninety-seven thousand federal employees who owe approximately one billion dollars in back taxes.  

A fellow veteran, who also read all the legislation stated, “Our Representative has no honor.”  This really hit home since I heard that all of the veterans on the VFW PAC who endorsed him got fired.  A thirty-four-year Representative should know the casualties he would cause by asking for their endorsement.   

The statements in his commercials about his opponent voting against “conceal and carry,” women in the military, reenlistment bonuses for the National Guard, veterans’ cemeteries/housing and internet voting are misleading at best.  Dishonorable is probably a better description.

I have a confession to make; I voted for this gentleman for the last twenty-plus years. He should be able to run on his own record of the last twenty months.

Kampen told me in a one-on-one interview “Ike has a tremendous record working for vets and Central Missouri. He ought to be able to run on his own reputation without having to distort someone else’s record. In my letter, I said winning at all costs should be reserved for war, not politics.”

Kampen recently appeared in a TV campaign ad supporting Vicky Hartzler in which he said “I didn’t leave Ike Skelton. He left me.”

Republicans packed the Boone County GOP Victory 2010 Office at 3809 S. Providence in Columbia, Missouri this afternoon to see Missouri’s Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Roy Blunt, Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-9), Missouri U.S. Senator Kit Bond and Ann Wagner, former U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg, former Chair of the Missouri Republican Party and former Co-Chair of the Republican National Committee.

The Columbia stop was one of a number of stops scheduled today covering multiple counties on the Roy Blunt Victory Rally bus tour. Vicky Hartzler, Republican candidate for Missouri’s 4^th Congressional District and Mike Kehoe, Republican candidate for Missouri Senate 6^th District, are among those traveling with Roy Blunt.

Vicky Hartzler joined Roy Blunt in stops at Harrisonville, Blue Springs, Sedalia, Jefferson City (see last photo in gallery, below), Osage Beach and Eldon.  She will be joining him in upcoming stops scheduled for Lebanon and Marshfield on Saturday morning.
